Under this series, till now we have spoken about acrylic cabinets, melamine cabinets, and laminate cabinets and the benefits of each. While these three are excellent options to cabinetry finish, in this blog, we are going to introduce yet another amazing finish for cabinets, that is popularly known as Lacquer. The name sounds stylish, isn’t it? Well, the cabinet finish is even more amazing. How, you ask?
Lacquer is a solvent-based artificial finish that is processed by mixing nitrocellulose plasticizers and pigments with gaseous solvents. It gives out synthetic look and sheen to the cabinets due to the presence of shellac in the mixture. Lacquer has derived its name from a Portuguese word ‘lac’ that means resins suspended from a certain source. This cabinet finish is often confused with varnish due to similarities in its appearance. However, the properties of lacquer are much higher than those of varnish. Let’s see what they are:
1.As opposed to varnish, lacquer has a higher aesthetic appeal than the former.
2.While varnish is available only in clear finish, lacquer can be found both in clear as well as colored finish.
3.To give a semi-gloss or satin sheen look to varnish finish, flattened agents must be added. While lacquer is available in different sheen ranging from ultra-gloss to ultra-matte.
4.Since lacquer has plasticizers, it makes them more durable than varnish. Lacquer is highly resistant to water, abrasion, and damages from acid and alkali.
5.While varnish is applied using a brush and takes time to dry, lacquer, on the other hand, is sprayed on to the surface and dry pretty quickly.
Whether it the high-gloss lacquer or the matte one, lacquer finish is another great alternative to bring in grandeur to your space. Stay tuned with Kabco Kitchen for the last cabinet finish from the 005 series!
